My First Post!
My name is Lauren Bersaglio, I am twenty-one, and I am in my second year of University studying Communications. I was born in British Columbia and when I was ten my family and I moved overseas to Zambia (in Southern Africa) where I lived for nine years. When I was seventeen I became anorexic and since then I have switched between anorexia, bulimia, and nearly every type of disordered eating in the book. The first time I went public about my struggles was in April of this year. I wrote an article that was published in my University newspaper (click here to read it) and since then I have not been able to stop talking because I believe it is something that needs to be talked about more. Eating disorders are rampant in our society, but for the most part they are kept secret – hidden beneath fear and shame and it is time we bring them out of the darkness and into the light.
When I was first struggling with anorexia I was afraid to talk about it with anybody because I felt they wouldn’t understand. The sad thing is, my fears were valid; they most likely wouldn’t understand because, let’s face it, there just isn’t much information being spread around about these disorders. Since going public about my struggles, I’ve had many people approach me and ask me to explain anorexia or bulimia because they don’t fully understand what it means to be anorexic or what makes someone want to eat a five thousand calories and then throw them up. Maybe they saw a brief special on “60 Minutes” or an article in the newspaper about Mary-Kate Olsen, but this hardly gives insight into the true emotions, feelings, and inner battles that are all part of an eating disorder.
That is why I decided to create this blog; I want to share my experiences with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating and to share my journey towards recovery (which I am still in the process of).
In case you are wondering about the title “expose(ED),” I will explain – eating disorders are very much an addiction, and, like any addiction, there is always that voice in your head that provokes unhealthy behaviours through deceitful promises, abusive words, and illogical calculations – a popular name for this voice amongst those struggling with an eating disorder is ED. My intention is to expose ED and to strip him of his power so that he can no longer stand.
So this is my promise to you: I will be fully honest and disclose as much information as I possibly can about my situation and what I have learnt along the way. So whether you know someone who is struggling with an eating disorder and you are searching for insight into their situation, or you are simply curious and would like to learn more about food addiction, or you are struggling with an eating disorder and are looking for someone who understands what you are going through, I hope that you will find this blog helpful, sincere, and, most of all, inspirational. And if you fall under the latter group and you are feeling discouraged and feel there is no hope let me say this – a month ago I was there, I was ready to throw in the towel and give up, but now I am on day 23 of recovery and every day I get a little stronger and every day it gets a little easier so DON’T GIVE UP! There is hope!
I look forward to sharing this journey with you…
♥ Lauren Bersaglio.
